Galatians 5

1Live in the Freedom That Christ Provides

Christ has set us free so that we may enjoy the benefits of freedom.
Lit. has set us free for freedom
So keep on standing firm in it, and stop attaching yourselves to the yoke of slavery again.John 8:32; Acts 15:10; Rom 6:18; Gal 2:4; 4:9; 1Pet 2:16
2Listen! I, Paul, am telling you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you.Acts 15:1; 16:3 3Again, I insist
Or testify
that everyone who allows himself to be circumcised is obligated to obey the entire law.Gal 3:10
4Those of you who are trying to be justified by the law have been cut off from Christ. You have fallen away from grace.Rom 9:31-32; Gal 2:21; Heb 12:15 5For through the Spirit, by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.Rom 8:24-25; 2Tim 4:8 6For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters. What matters is faith
Lit. But faith
that is active through love.1Cor 7:19; Gal 3:28; 6:15; Col 3:11; 1Thes 1:3; James 2:18, 20, 22

7You were running beautifully! Who cut in on you and stopped you from obeying the truth?1Cor 9:24; Gal 3:1 8Such influence does not come from the one who calls you.Gal 1:6 9A little yeast spreads through the whole batch of dough.1Cor 5:6; 15:33 10I am confident
Lit. confident about you
in the Lord that you will take no other view of the matter. However, the one who is troubling you will suffer God's
The Gk. lacks God's
judgment, whoever he is.2Cor 2:3; 8:22; 10:6; Gal 1:7
11As for me, brothers, if I am still preaching the necessity of
The Gk lacks the necessity of
circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed.1Cor 1:23; 15:30; Gal 4:29
12I wish that those who are unsettling you would castrate themselves!Josh 7:25; Acts 15:1-2, 24; 1Cor 5:13; Gal 1:8-9

13For you, brothers, were called to freedom. Only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity to gratify your flesh, but through love make it your habit to serve one another.1Cor 8:9; 9:19; Gal 6:2; 1Pet 2:16; 2Pet 2:19; Jude 1:4 14For the whole law is summarized in a single statement: “You must love your neighbor as yourself.”
Lev 19:18
Lev 19:18; Matt 7:12; 22:39-40; Rom 13:8-9; James 2:8
15But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you are not destroyed by each other. 16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will never fulfill the desires of the flesh.Rom 6:12; 13:14; Gal 5:25; 1Pet 2:11 17For what the flesh wants is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit wants is opposed to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, and so you do not do what you want to do.Rom 7:15, 19, 23; 8:6-7 18But if you are being led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.Rom 6:14; 8:2

19Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, promiscuity,1Cor 3:3; Eph 5:3; Col 3:5; James 3:14-15 20idolatry, witchcraft,
Or sorcery
hatred, rivalry, jealously, outbursts of anger, quarrels, conflicts, factions,
21envy, murder,
Other mss. lack murder
drunkenness, wild partying, and things like that. I am telling you now, as I have told you in the past, that people who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.1Cor 6:9; Eph 5:5; Col 3:6; Rev 22:15
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Or faith
John 15:2; Rom 15:14; 1Cor 13:7; Eph 5:9; Col 3:12; James 3:17
23gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.1Tim 1:9 24Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.Rom 6:6; 13:14; Gal 2:20; 1Pet 2:11 25If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.Rom 8:4-5; Gal 5:16 26Let us stop being arrogant, provoking one another and envying one another.Phil 2:3
